If you’re looking for a quick breakfast that feels a little more fun than plain toast and eggs, this air fryer egg toast is a fun one to try. The bread gets perfectly crisp around the edges while the egg cooks right in the center for the easiest all-in-one breakfast. And if you need a few more easy breakfast ideas to add to your rotation, make a batch of these strawberry cream overnight oats or pop these cheddar bagels in the air fryer for a quick savory breakfast. This sourdough French toast casserole is also a great option to make ahead to reheat and serve on busy mornings.

What You’ll Need

Here is what you’ll need to make this air fryer egg toast:

Ingredients to make air fryer egg toast.
  • Bread: A sturdy bread works best here so it can hold the egg without getting soggy. I love using sourdough, but thick sandwich bread works great too.
  • Eggs: They cook right into the center of the bread and you can adjust the yolk texture based on the total cook time.
  • Salt & Pepper: Simple seasonings that give the eggs the perfect flavor.
  • Butter (Optional): Adds extra flavor and helps the bread get even more golden and crisp.
  • Shredded Cheese (Optional): Perfect for sprinkling on during the last few minutes for a melty, cheesy finish.

See the recipe card below for full information on ingredients and quantities.

Ingredient Substitutions & Additions

  • Bread: Sourdough is my favorite, but any sturdy bread works well. Thick-cut sandwich bread, brioche, or Texas toast are all good options.
  • Butter: You can swap the butter for olive oil or cooking spray if preferred.
  • Shredded Cheese: Cheddar, mozzarella, parmesan, or pepper jack all work great here, depending on the flavor you want.
  • Seasonings: Add garlic powder, everything bagel seasoning, paprika, or red pepper flakes for extra flavor.

Step-by-Step Instructions

Steps to make air fryer egg toast.

STEP 1: If using butter, spread a thin layer onto both slices of bread.

STEP 2: Use the bottom of a mug, cup, or circular object to gently press an indent into the center of each slice of bread (Image 1). Then use the back of a spoon or your fingers to press the center down further to create a well for the egg (Image 2).

STEP 3: Place the bread slices into the air fryer basket.

STEP 4: Carefully crack one egg into the center well of each slice of bread. Sprinkle the salt and pepper evenly between both slices (Image 3).

STEP 5: Air fry at 300°F until the eggs are cooked to your liking:

  • 8–10 minutes for runny yolks
  • 11–13 minutes for jammy yolks
  • 14–15 minutes for firm yolks (Image 4).

STEP 6: If adding cheese, sprinkle it over the toast during the last 2–3 minutes of cooking so it melts perfectly without overcooking.

Storage Instructions

This air fryer egg toast is best enjoyed fresh since the toast can soften as it sits. If you do have leftovers, store them in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 1 day. Reheat in the air fryer for a few minutes at 325°F until warmed through and crisp again.

Tips For Success

  • Use sturdy bread so it holds the egg properly without becoming soggy. Thin sandwich bread can tear or sink in the center.
  • Press the well deep enough to help keep the egg contained while it cooks. If the indent is too shallow, the egg white may spill over the edges.
  • Cook times can vary slightly depending on your air fryer and the size of your eggs, so keep an eye on them the first time you make these. If your air fryer runs hot, you may want to reduce the cook time slightly to prevent the bread edges from getting too dark before the eggs finish cooking.
  • Adding cheese during the last few minutes helps it melt perfectly without becoming overly browned.

Recipe FAQs

Can I make these in the oven instead?

Yes! Bake at 375°F for about 12–15 minutes, depending on how you like your yolks cooked.

What is the best type of bread to use?

Sourdough is my favorite because it holds up really well, but Texas toast, brioche, thick sandwich bread, or even bagels can work too.

How do I know when the meatballs are fully cooked?

They should reach an internal temperature of 165°F and no longer be pink in the center. The cheese will be melted and bubbly once they’re done.

How do I keep the egg from spilling over the bread?

Make sure to press a deep enough well into the center of the bread before adding the egg. Using thicker, sturdy bread also helps keep everything contained.
