Churro Waffles

Ingredients

For The Churro Dough

  • 1 cup water
  • 4 tbsp oil
  • 2 tbsp pure maple syrup
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 1 cup all purpose flour

Cinnamon Sugar

  • ¼ cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tsp ground cinnamon

Instructions

  • Preheat a mini waffle iron (or full-sized waffle maker - see notes for non-mini waffle maker)
  • Add the water, oil, maple syrup, and salt to a pan over medium heat. Give it a stir and bring to a quick boil. Once it comes to a boil, remove it from the heat.
  • Add the flour to the liquid in the pan and use a spatula to quickly stir in the flour until it is combined into a dough. Use the spatula to work in the flour so that there are no specks of white remaining and the flour is fully incorporated.
  • Shape the dough into a large ball.
  • Slice the dough ball into 8 equal portions. Roll each portion into a small dough ball.
  • Place each dough ball in the center of a preheated mini waffle maker and press down firmly on the lid to close. Cook the waffles in the waffle maker for 6 to 8 minutes, or until the steam stops emitting from the waffle maker and the waffles are golden brown. These waffles take a little longer to cook than traditional waffles to ensure that the dough cooks through and the exterior is crisp.
  • Once cooked, immediately transfer the waffles into the cinnamon sugar mixture to coat. Make sure to get in all of the crevices to ensure the waffle is fully coated for that perfect amount of cinnamon-sugar sweetness in every bite!

Notes

  • For fun waffle pops, insert popsicle sticks inside the dough balls prior to cooking. Once cooked, feel free to add a drizzle of caramel sauce or melted chocolate!
  • If you are not using a mini waffle maker, cook the waffles until the steam stops emitting from the waffle maker and the waffles are golden brown.
  • These waffles do not have the texture of traditional waffles and are intended to have a crispy exterior and slightly chewy interior to resemble churro sticks.
