Ingredients

  • ½ cup old fashioned rolled oats
  • 3 tbsp unsalted butter, divided
  • 1 small apple sweet variety like Honeycrisp or Fuji
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 3 tbsp unsweetenened applesauce OR 1 tbsp maple syrup
  • ¼ cup almond flour

Instructions

  • Melt 2 tablespoons of butter in a pan on medium heat and add in the oats. Stir the oats around in the pan to lightly toast them for 1-2 minutes, or until they are slightly golden. Stir continuously and watch them carefully so that they do not burn. Remove them from the pan and set aside.
  • Peel and chop the apples into small cubes. Melt an additional 1 tablespoon of butter on the pan and reduce the heat to medium-low.
  • Once the butter melts, add the apples to the pan along with the cinnamon. Stir well until the apples are fully coated. Cook the apples for 2-3 minutes.
  • Add in the applesauce or maple syrup and stir to coat. Add the toasted oats back to the pan and stir.
  • Add the almond flour to the pan and stir until everything is thoroughly combined. Let it cool and serve over oatmeal, or yogurt, or enjoy it as is!

Notes

  • My favorite type of apple to use for this recipe is Honeycrisp apples. They are sweet and crisp and pair perfectly with cinnamon. If you cannot find Honeycrisp apples, I recommend another sweet apple variety such as Fuji apples.
  • If preparing this for a baby, use unsweetened applesauce as the sweetener. It softens up the crisp and is the perfect texture for babies. If you are preparing it for a toddler or an adult, use maple syrup as the sweetener.
